Oranga Tamariki, Ministry for Children, is responsible for the well-being of children in New Zealand, specifically children at risk of harm, youth offenders and children of the State. They wanted to make a logo for their chess club they have for kids in their youth justice residence, Korowai Manaaki. Their club was called the Dark Knights and they wanted to incorporate the iconography of a chess piece and bat imagery, as it is named after the Batman nickname, " Dark Knight". Early on we settled on the Rook icon to be used, as it was more easily identifiable as a chess piece. From there, the idea was to try and find a balance between having those two icons be combined within one logo and identifying the separate iconography of both imagery.
